Kevin Takes The Driver’s Wheel

Kevin, that’s my youngest son. He received his driving license two years ago but has hardly driven the family car. Unlike most lads of his age, he is not enthusiastic about taking the wheel and would rather enjoy rides as a passenger.

However, it’s getting silly for me every time he needs to hop over to his girlfriend’s home which is located on the very opposite end of the city. It’s not only the distance but also the traffic snarl leading to and from her location depending on the time of the day.

Today, Kevin had to do what a man has to do. Drive! Midway we had to make a stop and he asked me if his driving was passable. Not to discourage him, I said so far so good. Just keep focused and mind the traffic as he drives.

The return trip was something else. I had to give him a few valuable driving tips. Tips that came as a result of my foot stepping on the brake pedal even though there was none where I sat. LOL!

The 5 meters driver

While driving, Drivers should look beyond a distance of 5 meters. A distance of 15 meters is a good thumb rule. This enables the driver to visualize what is building up ahead of him and allows him to make the necessary corrections to avert an accident.

The look straight ahead visual driver

When having to drive defensively, as is the condition here where we live, it is important to make full use of the side and rear mirrors. What is developing at the side and rear of the car is important to stay clear of the behavior of motorists that might cause an accident to happen.

The whee-lets-speed round the bend driver

Kevin approaches bends a tad too fast and this is dangerous while negotiating a bend with reduced visibility of the moving vehicle ahead.

So, I shared some of my driving experience with Kevin today and I hope the remembers whenever he takes the wheel.

Those are very useful driving tips, Windy. I am sure Kevin will remember them all. He is a very smart lad like his father :-)

I will only get to understand the driving tips once I own a car, LOL!

    Lainybelle,

It is getting more and more dangerous to drive on the roads. There was a time when I loved to drive; no longer now.

Always remember! if you drive and your car goes out of control, do not slam on the brakes or pull up the handbrake. Just look out of the closest tree and head for it. LOL! just kidding yah.

  2. Hi Windy,

I am actually still having problem with my driving skill. Especially during the night where the lights are sometimes blinded me. In Malaysia, some of the driver chose to use a white LED lights instead of the normal one. The light is so bright, it even banned on the highway. Nevertheless, it only make me extra careful while on the road :)

On the other hand, all the best Kevin! Be a wise driver will ya!

    Hi bluecrystaldude,

    Great to see you here.

If it helps you my good man, this is how I handle lights from oncoming vehicles while night driving on Malaysian roads.

The way to reduce the strain on your eyes is to look a bit more to the left side of the road. Just a bit so that your point of vision is not at 12 o’clock eye position.

This reduces the blinding lights directly on your eyes and also, more importantly it ensures that you are not veering too far to the left being “blinded” by the bright lights of the oncoming vehicle. We do know that the shoulder bank of our Malaysian roads can be soft ground and the car might get stuck if the wheels get driven onto the shoulder or even send the car out of control.

Give it a try and after sometime, you will see how this method really saves eye strain from the problem that you mentioned.

    Cheers! my good man.
