I read a similar News article about this matter. It was titled, “Laugh everyday to keep the doctor away”.
Strange that in this Age and time, it is still being written. Strange because as a very young boy I remember seeing “Laughter is the best medicine” column in the Readers Digest publication. And that’s was more than a good four decades ago.
Have we forgotten how to laugh and need to be reminded?
I think so. Our modern lifestyle is so crammed with the rigors of competitiveness that we neither have the liberty nor the time to laugh our brains out.
Besides, there is a decorum attached to the manner how one laughs and when and where. It is like if one had to inexcusably let out a fart.
- If one laughs too loud, one might be considered boorish.
- If one laughs like a wimp, one might be considered lacking self confidence.
- If one laughs late, it’s no longer he who laughs last laughs best; rather it is a manifestation of a slow mind.
- If one laughs only when everyone’s eyebrows are raised, one might be considered a snob.
- If one decides to laugh only when reminiscing after retiring to bed, the following morning one might be taken to the hospital for the mentally disturbed.
So, it sort of explains why laughter is on the wane, despite all its inherent goodness.
What replaces laughter today?
Just a smile. Most often it is a forced smile. Perhaps with a nod of the head to make it complete.
It gives one the air of being contemporary. Sophisticated demeanor you know. Like how the rich and royalty do it in public. Hardly much said, just smile and nod – now and then.
